Racha - Unspoiled mountains and yet, enriched with everything else.

    Racha is tucked between Svaneti to the west, Russia to the north and South Ossetia breakway republic to the east. Symbolic backbone of the region is Rioni river, largest river of western Georgia. Capital of the province is Ambrolauri.

Racha is another mountainous region in Greater Caucasus. As mentioned in title, unlike other mountainous regions in Georgia, Racha's mountains can't compare to them and yet, Racha offers forests, mineral springs, caves, lakes, great food and fantastic wine. Since its lack of spoiled mountains, it is often overlooked. However, Georgians, who have no rush to visit, are well aware of Racha's beauty and hence, they form the majority of visitors.




Shaori Reservoir

    Shaori reservoir is one of the most attractive places in Racha. Heading towards Racha, you cannot overpass the reservoir, which dazzles you with its landscape. However Shaori is not very popular among tourists, as a tourist destination. 

However, on the plus side, it makes the place more interesting as people, who love to wonder places, which are not overcrowded with visitors - It's perfect for them. You could arrange various activities here - nowadays, fishing is the most popular one. The lake is home to various species of fish and people from all parts of Georgia visit for this purpose.

Shaori is beautiful in every season, however, it is stunning during early autumn period, when various colors are reflected into the lake.

Racha's cuisine is quite rich as well, however slightly different from the rest. Here are a few examples.

Mchadi - baked cornbread eaten with beans or cheese. Rachuli Mchadi, however, is mchadi filled with bacon and decorated in traditional design shown below.

There's also a meal called Ojakhuri, that initally translates as a "Meal for Family", however, in Racha they eat it with mushrooms and cheese. Illustration given below.
